As with exercise routines themselves, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to exercise gear. After all, that’s why there are so many types and models of equipment out there. While all that variety gives you a better chance of finding the equipment that’s best for you, it also means you need to do your research before you buy.
Beware of fads
Just like weight loss diets, exercise gear is subject to fads. Right now, elliptical machines are one of the most popular types of exercise equipment and while they do have a lot of advantages, some of the selling points frequently cited have become a little over-exaggerated over the last few years. These machines are good, but they don’t really burn five times more calories than a treadmill.
Mini exercise bikes are another one. They’re increasingly popular among desk workers in part because they’re sometimes promoted as being “just as good as stationary bikes.” As you might suspect, though, the fact is they don’t give you near the workout even a compact stationary bike can.
Check your assumptions
While some machines don’t quite live up to the hype surrounding them, there are a few unsung heroes out there, too. There’s a common belief that treadmills don’t burn off a lot of calories because working out on them so easy. In reality, though, the reverse is true: treadmills are one of the most efficient machines for calorie burning. (cite: www.cnn.com/HEALTH/9605/08/nfm/treadmills/index.html)
A stair climber may seem like it can’t not give you a great workout. After all, if just jogging up a flight of stairs gets your heart pumping, working out on a never-ending flight should be great exercise. Unfortunately, though, if you don’t use your stair climber with proper technique, you’re doing little more than wasting your time. (cite: www.stairclimbers.com)
Match your gear to your goals
When you’re new to working out, it can seem like all types of exercise gear are more or less the same. This is the same misunderstanding that leads underweight women to start doing aerobics because someone told them “exercise builds muscles.” All exercise can benefit your health in some way, but different types give you different results. A stationary bike works your lower body, while a rowing machine works your upper body. If you’re trying to burn fat, go with a treadmill or ski machine. For gaining muscle weight, try weight lifting equipment like free weights or a squats machine.
The right exercise gear can help you get in shape faster and keep you from getting bored with your routine so you’re not tempted to slack off. The key to choosing the equipment that’s best for you is to define your fitness goals, then review the stats on a variety of gear to find the ones that meets your needs best.
